Jun. 29th, 2010 12:00 pmThe FBI recently rounded up a group of “illegals”, alleged Russian spies operating in deep cover. The first thing that came to my mind was the thought that all the spy novels of the 60s and 70s have suddenly come true. The second that I should probably check out my Italian alchemists and the relics they left behind.
I also wonder if any are as cool as Theodore Maly, in either real life or Tim powers Declare
The FBI has a notoriously bad track record with counter-intelligence, so this is quite the coupe for them. However, based on the federal governments inability to recognize the difference between fiction and reality, I have to wonder if this wasn’t some kind of cool LARP.
Spies swapping identical orange bags as they brushed past one another in a train station stairway. Messages sent by shortwave burst transmission or in invisible ink. Both of these sound kind of old fashioned. So either the adage that good tradecraft is never outdated is true, or someone was running some very cool LARP action and I’m upset that I couldn’t get involved.
But if its real, you have to wonder about the value of this intelligence and wonder if some open source work wouldn't have been a better use of money.
