Last night [livejournal.com profile] bryant came over and we watched movies. Inluding Versus which had to be the best movie ever. Have more than 30 words spoken? Outrageous fight scene. Have any bit of exposition? Super fight scene!

It had zombes; and samurai; and gangsters; and samurai fighting samurai zombies; and then gangsters fighting gangster zombies; and gangster samurai fighting gangster zombies. Did I mention the zombies? Oh right and at the end there were mutants. And cyborg laser katanana. Can't forget those.

Acting.....well there wasn't much of that except tender moment between psychotic-guy gangster and geek-boy gangster. That was sweet. But then it was back to the killing and the fighting and the mayhem. Oh, and the zombies, must never forget the zombies!

Seriously though, it was very over the top and very fun.

We also watched Ringu, which might have been scary if we all hadn't seen the American version first. As we had it was rather ruined.

That sums up Versus very well.

I liked Versus...that movie cost virtually nothing to make and has launched the director's career. I think he's in Hollywood now, and I think he might be either making the sequel or remaking the movie. I really didn't think the Japanese verion of the ring was as good as the American one, in a lot of ways. Mostly the acting, though. K, who is from Tokyo, always bemoans the level of acting Japanese movies. There are some great actors, but most of the movies that make it here star pretty lame actors, what are called (counterintuitively) "talents" over there. We own both versions of the movie, but rarely watch the Japanese one.

He's making Versus II, but I don't think he's in Hollywood -- his most recent movie was the final Godzilla movie for Toho.
