Everyone else is thinking characters for [livejournal.com profile] jeffwik’s new game idea so I figure I should too. Now I’m having a problem, mainly its that I’ve done way to much forteana gaming and I don’t think Jeff has done a good enough job yet in articulating to me why this game is different enough for me to get into character creation. Or maybe I'm just lazy.

So, I decided to pick a fortean thing at random from my Complete Books of Charles Fort. Unfortunately I got one of the “seeing faces of religious personages in food items.” Which, I’m pretty sure is the largest category of fortean things ever, but maybe not the most playable.

So yeah I’m going to play the guy who found St Jerome on a pickle and got all crazy buying all the food items from eBay and then they started talking to him. You can blame [livejournal.com profile] peaseblossom for that last bit, she really liked Wonderfalls.

Or maybe not.

I LOVE that! Anything involving a pickle as a main character point is just okey-dokey with me!

Or maybe not as in or maybe you can't blame [livejournal.com profile] peaseblossom, or or maybe not as in maybe I won't play a pickle-obsessed Jeromian?

I would love to, but I have my raised-by-human/dog-people character already. Damn!

Nothing's set in stone. If you want to play Crazy Pickle Lady...

I really like my concept, but I like the pickle guy, too... maybe we can sit and talk and see what sounds better.

A pickle-obsessed Jeromian might have been fun. But fair enough. You seem to be trying to indicate, without actually saying so, that you want more information about the game before you come up with a concept. However I'm not sure what more information I can give. At this stage, what I'd like is a rough idea of some kind of Strangeness that has a minimal amount of physical evidence and that can lead into something else. "I saw something," "I did something," "someone did something to me."

I fel that so far all i have is "I want to run a fortean game with a mysterious benefactr." Which really leaves me uninspired. 'd like to know more about framewok and structure of the ame. want to hear about teme and mood and style. I want more details on what your intents are, most importantly I want to be assured that you have intents.

Uh huh. I'm actually having a hard time not getting annoyed, but okay. I am slightly offended by your apparent lack of trust in my abilities, so read this through that lens.

In re structure and framework: (qv http://www.livejournal.com/users/jeffwik/135997.html?thread=630845#t630845 )

What I plan to do is, over the three weeks or more until the first session, work out exactly how the five or six seemingly unrelated mysteries the players out forward actually intertwine truly madly and deeply. Once "play" actually begins, we'll spend a couple of sessions on a lightly structured investigation of each of the PCs' backgrounds in turn. During each of these investigations, ties to other PCs will be revealed and pipe laid for future revelation. By the time these introductory pieces are complete, we'll be a dozen or so sessions in and the game should have its own momentum, as loose ends crop up and so on. At this point I'll be able to jettison the COB patronizing professional Fortean investigator, as he'll no longer be needed.

It's a world in which two things are true: there are no coincidences, and there is no Prime Mover. Whenever something happens, it doesn't "just happen," it happens within the context of everything around it which is also happening. Dismal science describes only a tiny amount of the incredible world around us, a world where magnetized water can cure cancer and where contrails are evidence of the drugs They pump into the sky. These things don't mesh through the dedicated work of a global conspiracy. These things mesh because that's the way of the world. It's a world where the only people who know less than scientists are occultists.

But given that, while everyone else seems to have no trouble putting forward some kind of concept, you can't be bothered to invent something or even spell correctly, I can't help but feel that you're unwilling to meet me halfway here. If you'd rather not play, I'm not offended. Heck, it'd be easier logistically to balance one fewer players. Although I'd still want to use your living room.

Trust is one of those things that are earned. Since I've never had you as a gm, only a player, there are reasonable doubts. Lets be frank Jeff your idea of what makes something a fun scene doesn't always jive with everyone else's ideas (though you have been tons better about this in tantanea).

And I've already said that I don't trust anyone who puts less front-thought into a game as I do. I've said it again and again, so whya re you surprised that I'm asking for more? I'm basically asking that any prospective gm give me the same consideration that I, as gm, give to my players.
