[livejournal.com profile] peaseblossom mentioned this evening that she thinks we should record our game sessions and make them available as podcasts. This seems like a good idea for a few reasons:

  • It alleviates the need to take notes during a session. I can later listen to the session and take notes which means my attention is more on play and my notes are better. For a game like tantanea I really feel the need for good, solid notes.

  • It’s a development tool. I have really plateaued in my ability to easily grow n my gamemastering skills and this would allow me to closely listen to what happens in a session and learn from it.

  • Other people may be interested for one reason or another.

So, what sort of technology and software do I need to make this happen? Is it easily run from a computer? What sort of site needs will I need to host this sort of thing? Any advice?

[livejournal.com profile] peaseblossom has pointed me to RPGMP3 which is interesting but I do wish they'd spend some time talking about methods and giving advice. And their layout is awful.

Of course I still need to broach the subject to the group.

I've thought about doing this. Unfortunately the voice recorder widget on my iPod only gets a few hours before batteries run out. But I think it'd be quite interesting.

If someone has their laptop at the game, it'd be easier. Recording onto tape and then transferring is maybe a touch more of a pain. Plus an extra step.

We usually have a couple of laptops. So what sort of microphone do I need? Software?

Ideally, you'd want to use a PZM (pressure zone microphone)- those are the flat ones you can put in the center of a table, and it can pick up sound in a 360º radius. I may have one of those at work, and the adapters I'd need to get it plugged into a computer. I'll check tomorrow when I'm back in the office (woo hoo! day off!)

The equipment manager has already left for the weekend- I'll ask him Monday- I'm pretty sure we've got one of those.

Please congratulate peaseblossom on the successful gender reassignment surgery - at least he won't need to change his name now! ;)
