Alternate Reality Games

Infocult is doing a good job covering the new Lost ARG. I find Lost dull beyond belief but the concept of Alternate Reality Games fascinating. Unfortunately my dislike of Lost seems to overwhelm my curiousity here, but I am enjoying reading someone else blog about doing it. I can't wait till technology makes it more feasible to run one of these on the cheap. VOIP almost makes it doable.

I was interested in the Lost game until one of the secret messages during the first week had to be run backwards through a ROT13 cipher to decode, and even then wasn't clear, and decided that this whole thing just wasn't worth the amount of time and effort I'd have to put into it.

I had no idea until somebody said they used it and I looked it up. You had to take the numbers, convert them to the ASCII equivalents, then move 13 letters up the alphabet (thus the ROT13). Simple letter replacement cipher really, but figuring that out? Unless there are German U-boats involved, I don't want to have to try to break codes in my spare time.

It's a good game so far.

My family got into Lost, which we saw on DVD. Not having the weekly episode format helped.
