Pirates of the Midnight Gulf
Jun. 26th, 2006 09:05 pmIt was a thousand year Golden Age: A culture of prosperity and endless wealth; of peace; and of immense scientific and technological advancement. It was an age of equality, of diversity, and of progress. Humanity, artificial intelligence and sophonts from other evolutionary paths unified in a noo-cooperative of untold promise.
This all came crashing down a generation ago and out of the wreckage came corporations and guilds that branded knowledge, making it their own proprietary possessions to be dolled out to those who can pay. If you want access to the genetic, nanite or quantum wealths of science than you pay for them. They control the galaxy now. All in the name of profit. This is no longer a Golden Age
There are rebels, many call them pirates -- with their fast ships they prey on the shipping lanes, prey on the information streams. Some do it in memory of the lost golden age. Some do it for their own enrichment. Others do it out of spite.
Once there was a Golden Age. Now there is darkness. Once the galaxy was unified now it is strife. Once there was peace. Now there are Pirates.
This game is space opera with all the combination of scale and romance that means. In terms of scale nothing less than a planet will be involved and its fate will at times involve the survival of not only civilization but the galaxy or entire universe as well. Players will be pirates struggling against corporations (who are evil) striving to enrich themselves and if they save a world or a damsel (or prince) in distress at the same time, all the better!
This will be a game of swashbucklers. The old code of justice of the fallen Golden Age dies hard and even the worse foes will display a strong sense of justice and in a universe linked together (and with many things capable of being broadcast far and wide – for a price) class and wit during combat and adversity is currency in itself.
