I've decided that I need to keep better track of what books I read and what movies I watch and like during the eyar. Because otherwise it all becomes a blur. I have no idea how many books I read in 2003, when they were published, or similar things I've been asked lately. Though in my defense I usually rememebr what I've read in general and I can remember details. I'm just not sure if I read it in 2003 or 1995 ussually.

So for now on I'll make use of the memories feature here on Livejournal. Just warning folks.

On a completely different note, Laura Kipnis, who wrote the interesting Against Love: A Polemic (which I did read in 2003), writes over on Slate about whether professors should be allowed to sleep with their students. Why I found this an interesting article I'm not sure, since sleeping with a professor seems a lot different when your 33, and I doubt I'll be on the other side of the desk anytime soon.

Lexicon of the Second Age is coming along nicely. Lexicon is a lot of fun, very much in the tradition of the letter game, but its not an RPG, but then I didn't expect it to be, no matter what Neel labelled it as. But, as a tool I find it to be very good for world building, a different experience from a traditional letter game, but still quite fun and worthwhile. While we're only up to C its an experience I envision doing again. The nice thing about it, in opposition to a letter game, is that it doesn't take much of a time commitement. Though I have been toying with a Nobilis letter game for a long time (I even set up a livejournal for it), so maybe I should launch that sometime.

Vidocq

[livejournal.com profile] bryant gave us a piratical version of Vidocq the other night that he got when he was down in Texas. Jess and I watched it last night.

It was a beautiful movie, the sets, costumes, cinetmatography, the whole atmosphere really captured the feel of oppressive, bloody Paris of the 1830s filtered through an occult lense. That part I could watch forever.

Gérard Depardieu was fun as Vidocq, though I wish he was on screen a lot more than he was.

The Alchemist was very cool looking, except when he moved. The cloak didn't transfer well to the small screen, and why did he have to be kung fu guy? He was creepier whe he was all spidery.

The plot was rather transparent, but quite fun.

But the movie was horribly edited. It shifted scenes randomly and most of the transitions hurt my head.

But it was fun, and it was about one of those really historically interesting figures, so I forgive this movie a lot. And I can safely recommend it to just about everyone on my friend's list.

I think its amsuing that most of my French movie watching has ben off the odd variety, for example Les Rivières pourpres or the over valued Brotherhood of the Wolf.
