Indian Mob destroys Manuscripts
Jan. 7th, 2004 08:05 amAn Indian mob has destroyed 30,000 ancient manuscripts and rioted in retaliation for Oxford University Press publishing a book about a Hindu king.
Hindu fundamentalism throws me for a loop, I just don't understand it. Its not like Hindus are really just one faith, we're talking major divisions between the Shaivites, Vaishnavas, Shaktas, Smartas and a number of other groups which are constantly being revised relative to modern gurus. Those called Hindu fundamentalists are also divided up into these different sects. So, what common belief can be found in these Hindu groups which can be called Hindu fundamentalism? It often strikes me that Hindu fundamentalism is more anti-Islam. But I think I'm oversimplifying there.
What I do find interesting about these Hindu fundamentalists is how often I hear about their riots being about how history is interpreted. And of course their propensity to burn the relics of the past.
