So [livejournal.com profile] peaseblossom and I have been watching Supernatural lately, at the instigation of [livejournal.com profile] kniedzw, and so far it’s okay. We saw 8 episodes of season 1, but due to library craziness we’ve just started season 2.

I like the relationship between the two brothers. I like the idea of two family members on a road trip across a weird haunted America that’s really all about healing their family now that they are adults and there is no parent around. Plus it helps that the actors are so cute.

I like when they talk about story cycles. When they are dealing with urban legends the writers are good. When they stray from the urban legends they suck. I liked the idea of a Wendigo being affected by Cree symbols even if that Wendigo is far from Cree lands. I liked their Bloody Mary and their Women in White. When they stray from that it becomes much more the monster of the week and less exciting. Unfortunately season 2 seems to have forgotten the story cycle idea. Even their evil clown episode ended up being a rakasha and not so exciting.

The show actually does a good job of separating itself from some other monster hunting shows, which is crucial.

And it feels like a roleplaying game. Me, I’d run it in Gumshoes.

The unfortunates. Well lets just say women in refrigerators.

You should be aware that the misogyny of the series goes into fairly scary and epic levels in season 3. As for RPGs, it looks impressively like Hunter: The Vigil.

Indeed. The racism also gets worse.

Ugh, by the end of season 2 I've given up.

I also enjoyed supernatural. But they fell into the same "monster of the week" trap that most shows of this nature tend toward, and when they tried to find new ways to increase the tension in the show, instead of expanding in interesting directions they resorted to writing their characters less intelligently and creating increasingly unlikely excuses why their monster-busting technology would fail at a critical time.

But still, a fun middle-American ghost-hunting romp.

Heh. You guys are probably at about the spot in the series I'm at, then.

...and yeah. I'm not a huge fan of the women in refrigerators problem, either. Sad that you didn't get to see the end of Season 1, however. I rather liked it.

The djinn episode was equally annoying.
