One of the things I get in my email box is the State Department's Background briefs, which are usually rather dull, but I like getting them, call me weird.

Anyway, I found it interesting what the State Department says about our relationship with Canada. What I particularly found amusing was how the State Department found the need to detail recent disagreements in so much detail. Which isn't that usual in comparison to other background briefs.

It's not that they detail the disagreement that seems odd to me, but the defensiveness used in stating the US position. Especially in the Mine Ban Treaty one.

Interestingly enough, no mention of the marijuana flap that led to such contremps last year (with US Rep Mark Souder actually threatening Canada with 'peril'...he actually said "They will proceed with decriminalization at their peril" according to this (http://www.stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/246/mauricecauchon.shtml)) or any of the other tensions coming from their unwillingness to be our lapdog.

I guess it's like when my grandmother used to fight with my mom about what kind of thimbles to use when she was really pissed that my mom was still married to my dad.
