Wiki woes

Both Tantaene animis caelestibus irae and Age of Paranoia are regularly hit by wiki-spammers, but recently they seem to be getting more and more inventive in it. Its getting very annoying the amount of times I'm doing page restores.

I wonder if this is endemic to all wikis or if [livejournal.com profile] bryant really pissed off some spammers at some point and they come gunning for him.

It's pretty much endemic, and wiki technology is not up to snuff for anti-spam measures. Sigh.

I could turn off edits on AoP, if you'd like?

Thats probably a good idea. The bizarre chinese porn spam might stop then.

I knew I should have been reading the wikis more regularly...

I have the whiterose wikis set up so only permitted editors can add to each one. We get spammers who register and then discover they can't edit anything but their own page. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

On the wiki we're just starting we're going to set it up so that only registered users can edit and you can only get registered by moderator approval. It's not a great solution, but it's better then me doing page restores all the time.

It helps that we're a relatively close-knit group, even coming to the several hundred people mark. If I want someone to be able to edit I probably know him already (this is the Hebrew wiki, of course).

I theoretically like the idea of anyone being able to participate. Just not happy with the real world results.

And of course the spamers don't bother with the specific flavor of wiki, which is even more annoying cause then their spam is illegible.

I'm not sure but I think [livejournal.com profile] bryant whose server it is has some problem with it. Beats me really.
